Essena O’Neill is an 18-year-old Australian teen who amassed half a million followers on Instagram, 200,000 followers on YouTube and Tumblr, 60,000 on Snapchat, sharing seflies, all of these accounts have now been deactivated. She has decided she is done with social media. She deleted 2000 photos, renamed her account to “Social Media Is Not Real Life.”
She has also changed captions on some existing photos to reveal the truth behind the perfect image.
Real caption edit: @rachael_consaul took some great photos. Without a doubt she is talented. Originally I wanted them for my new site essenaoneill.com Oh how much can change in a few small weeks. I now wish I wasn’t wearing such a mask. I love this dress for it makes me feel like a fairy. What wasn’t captured was the long talks we had sitting on the beach waiting for golden hour lighting. That’s real life, this image is contrived beauty, not real. A photo posted by Social Media Is Not Real Life (@essenaoneill) on
NOT REAL LIFE – took over 100 in similar poses trying to make my stomach look good. Would have hardly eaten that day. Would have yelled at my little sister to keep taking them until I was somewhat proud of this. Yep so totally #goals A photo posted by Social Media Is Not Real Life (@essenaoneill) on
Who agrees? Maybe it is time for someone to create a social sharing platform not based on validation in views, followers and likes but instead shared for real value and love.
