What Is Face Serum, And How Does It Work?

There are seemingly innumerable beauty products out there that promise to smooth, soften, renew and hydrate your skin. It's hard to feel lost. It used to be when we wanted to moisturise our skin, there was only one obvious option: moisturiser. But now, serums are gaining popularity, leading many of us wondering what they are, exactly, and why (and if) we should use them. Let's clear up these questions.

What is a face serum?

A face serum is a high-concentration, deeply penetrating, lightweight liquid that packs a heavy punch of active ingredients to infuse your skin with mucho good stuff. We're talking age-defying antioxidants, peptides and skin eveners and brighteners. Yes, they will hydrate and replenish your skin like moisturisers, but they lack the occlusive ingredients (e.g. mineral oil or petrolatum) that prevent water from evaporating. In fact, they are mostly water based and the molecules that compose the serum are super small, so they can be more readily absorbed deep into the skin. As a result, a little bit of serum goes a long way.

How does a face serum work?

As we've explained briefly, the tiny molecular structure of a face serum mean that it can be absorbed better and faster into your skin, which means even the deeper layers of your epidermis will get treated by the serums powerful active ingredients. Moisturiser require thickening and lubricating ingredients, like seed oils and nuts, and these have larger molecules that lock in moisture, near the surface of your skin. This isn't bad, of course, it's just different than what a serum does; namely, gives you a super sonic hit of serious skin nourishment.

Which should you use?

Both! Use a good quality serum first, like Clinique face serum. This will deeply nourish your skin. Then, use a quality moisturiser to provide further nourishment, while locking in those mighty active ingredients.

If you want heavy-hitting results from a beauty product, you should definitely add a serum to your beauty regime. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking to brighten your complexion, smooth your skin, correct uneven tone or drastically reduce fine lines and wrinkles  — there is a serum for that.

For best results, use your serum at night on a clean face. Your body does most of its repairing and replenishing while you snooze, so by soaking your skin in serum then, you’re making the most out of this revitalizing window.
