0-6 Months: Your New Baby and You – Breastfeeding Problems (part 2)

Did you know…

that it’s perfectly normal
for your baby to become distracted while feeding? Even hungry babies
can lose interest. Try to find a peaceful place to feed and talk to your
baby quietly, so that he concentrates on you rather than what is going
on around him. If he starts to come off and on, take him off the breast
and try again later. He’ll soon realize that feeding time is not
playtime!

Teething babies

If your baby is latched
on properly, she shouldn’t be able to gnaw or bite, but if she’s
teething she may use your breasts for comfort. Remove her from your
breast as soon as she’s finished feeding and try rubbing a cold, wet
cloth on her gums, or offer her something else to chew on.

Breastfeeding to sleep

Many babies seek the
breast when they are sleepy because it’s comforting and familiar. There
is nothing wrong with breastfeeding a baby to sleep. You don’t want her
to become dependent on you feeding her to fall asleep, though. Begin the
transition to settling her without milk when you’re both ready.

Infused Waters

It is important to drink plenty of fluids. Many health spas serve infused waters, which are refreshing and a lot more interesting than plain water. Keep in the refrigerator and have some when you are thirsty.

4–5 minutes

NOTE

1 Adult

  • 2 flour tortillas

  • 2 tbsp salsa

  • 1/2 cup shredded cooked chicken breast

  • 1/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack or Cheddar cheese

  • For serving

    • 1 tbsp sour cream (optional)

    • 2 tbsp guacamole or a few slices of avocado (optional)

  1. Place a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat to warm.

  2. Put one tortilla on a
plate and spread the salsa over the top. Scatter the chicken and cheese
evenly over the salsa and top with the second tortilla. Slide the
quesadilla into the hot frying pan and lower the heat slightly. Cook
until the underside is toasted, about 2 minutes, pressing the quesadilla
down lightly with a slotted spatula.

  3. Using your hand to
steady the top, carefully flip the quesadilla over with the spatula.
Cook until the second side is toasted, 2–3 minutes, pressing down
lightly. When the quesadilla is ready, the cheese will have melted and
the chicken will be hot throughout. (If flipping the quesadilla makes
you nervous, you can pop the frying pan under a preheated broiler to
    cook the top.)

  4. Slide the quesadilla
onto a plate and let stand for 1–2 minutes, then cut in quarters. Serve
hot, with sour cream and guacamole or with avocado slices, if desired.
