  1. Gemäldegalerie

    Berlin’s best art museum, the Gemäldegalerie focuses on European art of the 13th to 19th centuries, such as Caravaggio’s Cupid Victorious, and works by Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens .

  2. Neue Nationalgalerie

    The
    National Gallery’s collection includes modern German art and classics
    of the 20th century. It often holds spectacular temporary exhibitions.

  3. Alte Nationalgalerie

    The
    Old National Gallery, built by Friedrich August Stüler in 1866–76 on
    the Museumsinsel, has been completely restored. Today it holds a
    collection of 19th-century (and mainly German) paintings, including
    works by Adolf von Menzel, Wilhelm Leibl, Max Liebermann and Arnold
    Böcklin. The gallery also has sculptures by Schadow, Rauch and Reinhold
    Begas.

  4. Hamburger Bahnhof

    A
    “museum of the present day”, the historic Hamburg Station houses modern
    paintings, installations and multi-media art. One of its highlights is
    the Erich Marx Collection, with works by Joseph Beuys. Apart from famous
    artists like Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Robert Rauschenberg, it also
    owns works by Anselm Kiefer, Sandro Chiao and others.

  5. Museum Berggruen

    Heinz
    Berggruen, born in Berlin in 1914, emigrated but returned to Berlin in
    1996. His collection, including works from Picasso’s “blue period”, is
    based in a historic building by Stüler.

  6. Bauhaus-Archiv

    Few
    schools have exercised as much influence on 20th-century architecture
    and design as the Bauhaus, founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius. On show in
    the museum are furniture, sketches, everyday objects and paintings.

  7. Deutsche Guggenheim

    Sponsored by the Deutsche Bank, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions, often showing modern art from the US.

  8. Berlinische Galerie

    Huge
    collections of mostly German, east European and Russian painters,
    photographers, graphic designers and architects from the 20th century,
    such as Baselitz, Grosz and Kirchner.

  9. Bröhan-Museum

    A
    collection of Art-Nouveau and Art-Deco objects from around Europe is on
    display at this small museum. There are also paintings by Berlin
    artists.

  10. Kupferstichkabinett

    Five
    centuries of prints and calligraphies, including works by Botticelli,
