Actor Richard E. Grant hosted the 76th annual EE British Academy Film Awards, marking the return of British cinema’s biggest night.

Richard, 65, and Alison Hammond hosted the event, which took place at the Royal Festival Hall, and film critic Ali Plum was spotted on the red carpet with Vick Hope.

Best Actor went to Austin Butler, who shocked everyone by beating out Colin Farrell.

After portraying Elvis Presley in the Baz Lurhmann biopic, the actor fought back tears as he accepted the award and paid tribute to the late singer’s family.

While accepting the award, Austin choked back tears as he thanked the cast and crew for their hard work on the film.

At the ceremony, Butler said, in his best Elvis impersonation, “This means the world to me.” He had learned the accent for Baz Luhrmann’s film.

He also thanked the Presleys for sharing their memories of Elvis with the film crew and said he ‘hopes he made them proud.’

Cate Blanchett’s performance in the biopic Tar earned her the award for Best Leading Actress, the only major victory for the film.

She thanked her mother and director Todd Field as she accepted the award, and, as Blanchett noted, 2022 was a “extraordinary year for women.”

Her role as Lydia Tar, she said, “was a dangerous and career-ending potential undertaking,” and that the idea that women’s experience is not “monolithic” had been dismantled.

During his opening monologue, Richard made a joke about Will Smith’s infamous slap at last year’s Oscars, saying, “On my watch, no one gets slapped tonight.”

After presenter Chris Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith stormed onto the stage at the 94th annual Academy Awards in March and slapped Rock.

The actor was banned from all Academy events for the next 10 years and resigned from the organization after winning the coveted best actor Oscar moments later.

Grant made the comment at the Baftas that the only slaps that would be happening on Sunday would be slaps on the back.
